suspicious ghosts

I recently read a blog post for the CFI that spoke of how the television show ‘Ghost Hunters International’ had, on one of their shows made contact with what they claimed was the spirit of a woman reputed to haunt the location they had visited. The strange thing was that the woman said to haunt the location was actually a fictional character meaning that GHI had either: a) Done the impossible, or, b) Not done their homework (naughty, naughty them…) The episode was called ‘The legend of Rose Hall” and it aired last week as the thirteenth episode of the second season. Rose Hall isn’t a person but in fact a place and the building is said to be haunted by the ghost of an evil woman named Annie Palmer who is often referred to as “The White Witch of Rose Hall.” According to Ben Radford who wrote the revealing article for the Fortean Times and the Centre for Inquiry blog: Annie was “beautiful beyond compare; she had a rich throaty voice with black penetrating eyes… Her complexion was smooth, and she could shift from a gentle smiling creature to a haughty, cruel, sensual, cat-like woman, gracefully exuding both anger [...]

Bunny business from Acorah

The Metro recently ran a story about a family whose abnormally large pet rabbit that weighs as much as a three-year-old child has been blamed by self proclaimed medium Derek Acorah for ‘channeling spirits’ that caused the family house to be actively haunted. The Metro went with the headline ‘The pet rabbit so large they thought he was possessed’ because, you know, it has nothing to do with the fact that Ralph the rabbit is the offspring of Amy the Rabbit who was the world’s biggest rabbit until her death last year. Something the article actually touches upon towards the end! It almost seems that Derek is keen to hop onto (…) any story that might bring him a bit of lime light these days because this story is possibly even more lame than the Michael Jackson seance that he tried to pull off last year. The Metro quoted Ralph the rabbits owner Pauline as saying: ‘We are pretty sure our house is haunted by something or other, so Ralph went up to London with friends of ours to meet Derek Acorah, they said it was pretty spooky and he had a good old chat with Ralph about the spirits [...]

Weird talking: Trystan Swale

Righteous Indignation host Trystan will be speaking on February 27th at the next ‘Weird talking’ event at The Kings Arm Hotel in Old Town, Swindon. Saucer Saboteurs — Disinformation Within UFOlogy Diluted truths, outright lies and red herrings — in the late 1990s some 80% of the American population believed successive administrations were withholding information related to the existence of alien visitors to their airspace. As pressure mounts for governments to disclose their knowledge of UFOs, fingers remain pointed at those accused of attempting to derail the efforts of committed UFO researchers. Who are the shady characters attempting to mislead those ufologists who may have strayed too close to the truth? The answer is not what you may expect. Tickets cost £6 and can be bought here or on the door (though places are limited and can’t be guarenteed if you turn up on the night.) Righteous Indignation host Hayley will also be at the event as part of the crew hosting the event, so what better way to meet half of the team behind the Righteous Indignation podcast whilst getting to hear all about disinformation within UFOlogy? (They also have quite a good bar!)

Where does the buck stop?

I do not feel that people who believe they can speak to the dead, can predict the future and solve police cases, or think they can heal peoples illnesses/injuries should be allowed to freely promote these ideas without being challenged about the claims they are making. Call me a critic, but that’s the way I feel, especially when there is no evidence to back up their claims other that anecdotal “he says, she says” bull crap. So, when I raised this concern with one of the presenters of the Haunted911 online radio show, the show that lets people freely promote such ideas through interviews and chat session, and my concerns were completely ignored with the response of ‘If you don’t like it, then don’t listen to the show’ it made my blood boil. There is no doubt in my mind that I will come in for some criticism for writing this as I am, however this isn’t something that bothers me whatsoever. My first question to the presenter was: “I think it’s really sad that you claimed you are becoming a more rational person and yet, you don’t even challenge people who say they can speak to the dead. Perhaps it is [...]

Conspiracy busting

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending Oxford Skeptics in the Pub to watch a talk by David Aaronovitch on the subject of conspiracy theories*. Unless I’m very much mistaken, the Q&A session that followed passed without the most obvious question of all: how can you tell what is a genuine conspiracy and what is just a conspiracy theory? Having a huge interest in the field of conspiracies, particularly the more outlandish and ridiculous ones, I was surprised at this omission especially as it is one that is often raised in casual conversation. It was something that a former guest, Karl Mamer, touched on during episode eight of the podcast. If you want my honest answer then here it is … it can be extremely difficult, especially as some conspiracy theories just feel like they could have something in them. Take one of the most high profile, that which suggests 9/11 was an ‘inside job’ by the US government or even the Israeli secret service. As recently as 2002 I believed in the latter, it just seemed possible given Mossad’s track record. I mean, how could a bunch of men escape detection for so long, learn to fly [...]

What are we scared of?

In episode six we interviewed author Michael Hallowell on a range of subjects. At one point the assertion was made that some skeptics are scared to believe in the paranormal. I was going to challenge Michael on this, but as the interview moved on quickly there didn’t seem a natural opportunity to address the issue — hence why I’m writing this article. The ‘scared excuse’ is one I often hear trotted out by true believers in a particular idea who have difficulty understanding why skeptics do not share their point of view. I don’t see how it adds up. What exactly is there for skeptics to be scared of? I am always amazed when the ‘scared excuse’ is trotted out for the issue of life after death. It must be horrendous to imagine spending time (possibly eternity) having a great time behind the pearly gates, rather than making the most of three score and ten years on this planet before disappearing six feet under or up a flue. It must also be equally terrible to spend money on a course in reiki healing, be able to cure yourself and others of illnesses and save hundreds of pounds on prescription fees. [...]

It’s a miracle!

…Or is it? Chase Kear, an athlete from Colwic, Wichita in the US fell on his head during a pole vaulting exercise in October. His skull has cracked from ear to ear, his brain was swelling, and doctors told his family that his life was at risk both from the injury itself, the surgery that would need to be undertaken to relieve the pressure on his brain or the infection that might follow the surgery. The outlook wasn’t good. However, from the moment that the accident occured Chases’ family had begun to pray for his recovery. His aunt had asked a local priest to perform the Catholic sacrament of anointing the sick (known as last rites.) The same aunt also called the Sacred heart Church in Colwich asking people there to get everyone in the church to start praying to a local hero called Father Kapaun for help. Now, who was Father Kapaun? Well, Kapaun was a chaplain assigned to the U.S. Army’s Eighth Cavalry regiment, which was surrounded and overrun by the Chinese army in North Korea in October and November 1951. He became a hero for rescuing wounded soldiers from the battlefield and risking death by preventing Chinese executions [...]

The psychics are listening!

I’ve had a curiousness about the people who listen to Righteous Indignation and had it confirmed to me via an unexpected friend request on Facebook yesterday, that when it comes to the claims made by supposed super-humans we do indeed have listeners that sit on both sides of the fence. It’s not often I recieve friend requests from people I don’t know, and being naturally curious I accepted. It turned out that the man (whom I shall not name) was a listener. He was full of praise regarding the Chris Williams interview in episode four but what threw me was a comment he made regarding the famous medium Colin Fry. “You mentioned Colin Fry in it [the podcast] and he’s a good guy despite what you may think” Anyone who has listened to episode four (hint, hint) will know that my co-host Trystan did an impression of Colin Fry during the news topic discussing a ghost story attached to a renovated church. So good was his impression in fact that I didn’t realise that he was talking about the ‘New house effect’ at the time (I was instead so overwhelmed with the idea that I was ACTUALY talking to Colin Fry that [...]

Caveman pareidolia

Very often we are spoilt for choice with news stories to cover for the podcast. Planning and editing restraints mean Hayley and I have to forego some of them in favour of more interesting stories. Even so, some of those that do get missed out are still worth examining. So let’s start with another ghost photograph. The Daily Mail on 18 June carried this curious picture, taken at Kent’s Cavern in Devon, England. According to the article it shows ‘the ghostly face of the caveman seems to hover in mid air staring in to the distance.’ What I love about these stories is that some, most likely, completely irrelevant historical information gets thrown into the mix as weak supporting evidence. The Daily Mail don’t disappoint: For almost 200 years archaeologists have been digging up the prehistoric caves hoping to unearth evidence of our ancestors. They’ve found lots of bones of all sorts of animals — as well as a human jawbone dated at around 40,000 years old which was when Neanderthal Man became extinct. Now, it seems, there could be fresh evidence of the early inhabitants of the caves — but no excavations were needed for this new ‘find.’ Simon [...]
